Reference Review: The Panerai Luminor Marina PAM911“Last One For Paneristi”

This is a very special Panerai, admired by many in the paneristi community. This is the Panerai Luminor Marina 8-Days, model reference PAM911. View our Video Review on YouTube

Designed by former CEO Angelo Bonati, responsible for growing Panerai from a micro-band to a major player in the Richemont portfolio. The model is called “last one for Paneristi”, signalling Bonati’s final farewell to the brand and the Paneristi community.

The watch is limited to 500 pieces, and has become one of the most sought-after Panerai in the world. Its popularity isn’t just down to its scarcity. This model is beautifully designed, with a 44mm case in polished stainless steel, military green dial, faux patina lume and matching gold hands. Other noteworthy features are the 8 day in-house movement without “8 days” on the dial and the screw down caseback engraved with “Last one for Paneristi” and Angelo Bonati’s initials. It’s fitted on a dark brown leather strap, which compliments the colourway of the dial very nicely. The model ticks all the boxes with how the majority of Panerai owners imagine the perfectly designed panerai.

Taking a closer look at the case, it has a very sleek and complete look with it being polished throughout. It contrasts well with the more understated dial and gives the watch a balance for both classy and casual wear. As a decorated limited edition piece, it seems more suited to have a polished case. 316L stainless steel is Officine Panerai’s material par excellence since it is highly resistant to corrosion and is hypoallergenic, making it ideal for contact with the skin.

The sandwich dial is beautifully designed, with a matte military green upper disc, and faux patina lume on the lower disc. The display remains classic with central hours and minutes – with polished baton hands – and a small seconds positioned at 9 o’clock. The gold hands match both the green dial and the lume, giving the dial a sophisticated and clean look.

Most Panerai with 8 day movements have “8 Days” displayed on the dial, which is not favoured by many. The fact this was removed shows the brand’s awareness of Paneristi’s desires. Under the screwed steel caseback is the brand’s classic handwound movement, the calibre P.5000, developed and manufactured in-house. The long power reserve of 192 hours, that is 8 days, is achieved by coupling the two spring barrels with toothed rims in series. The twin assembly enables longer, thinner springs to be used, resulting in a longer duration and greater uniformity in delivering energy to the movement.

The cutouts reveal the Arabic numerals and hour markers, as well as the lower plate coated with faux patina Super-Luminova, thus offering a good contrast during the day, and great luminosity in the dark.

This watch is a real trophy for many collectors. Although the meaning behind this limited edition anniversary piece is significant, it’s hailed for being superbly designed, and having everything you’d want in a Panerai watch.
